On a scorching sunny day in June, I hit the road to go to much-heard about “Les puces du canal”, a big flea market near Lyon. Being a lover of interior design and decoration (I could literally redo my entire home every other week), this flea market was heaven for me! Therefore, I decided to compile a small guide for you, and maybe inspiring you to visit this place.

“Les puces du canal” are located on the outskirts of Lyon, but don’t be fooled by their name. I thought they’re in the middle of quaint countryside, by a neat canal. I couldn’t have been more wrong?! Instead of green hilltops and leafy trees, I was greeted by concrete and industrial buildings.

This landscape nuisance didn’t stick for long, though. Especially not once I entered the actual grounds of the flea market. It was vintage furniture shopping heaven! Kilometres of stands, selling everything from china to rattan or industrial furniture and colourful glassware.

You can literally shop till you drop at “les puces du canal”. (Re)decorating your entire house while only spending a small budget. In fact, as customs wants it in flea markets, bargaining your future purchase is quite common. I made several great deals, allowing me to buy more for less!

The flea market opens Thursdays and on weekends. From 6am to noon, the private sellers start to arrive and set up their booth, whereas from 9am onwards it’s the professionals’ sellers turn.

And if all this shopping and bargaining makes you hungry and thirsty, there also are cute little guinguettes and traditional brasseries.

Meandering through the alleys of this market feels like time is suspended. It’s impossible not get inspired! There is such a melting pot of styles and atmospheres.
